Menashe & Echinocactus grusonii
I am married and have two children. I was born in 1945 in Bucharest, Romania, and immigrated to Israel in 1950, living in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. I currently reside in Givataiim. I studied abroad and have spent a considerable number of years living there.
I have been collecting and growing cacti for 45 years.
My departed father used to grow cacti on our balcony on Trumpeldor Street in Tel Aviv. They were among the first plants in the collection belonging to the genus Echinopsis. We acquired large mature plants. The plants were raised in containers 10-15 cm or more in diameter, and most of them produced white flowers. These were the first plants to become popular in Israel back then. The shape of the plants, their size and the color of their flowers were what led to my great love of cacti.
I currently own several dozen Echinopsis, which produce flowers of many different colors. Most are hybrids, crossed with Lobivias, among others. They flower in shades of white, cream, yellow, orange, red, lavender and magenta.
I currently grow cacti at my home in Givataiim. I possess most of the familiar and rare varieties. My collection contains a large number of mature plants, greater than 10-15 cm in diameter, some of which I collected from their native habitats and introduced to Israel with permission and under supervision.
Among the more familiar plants are:
Lophophora sub-species bearing seven different flower colors
Aztekium ritteri and Aztekium hintonii
Up to now - and I intend to continue doing so in the future - I have sown many different kinds of seed each year (hundreds of varieties in non-commercial quantities).
The sources vary: friends, growers from abroad, societies and nurseries overseas. I purchase most of these seeds.
