Growing conditions for Astrophytum are not particularly difficult. The soil must be well drained and they must be watered carefully, taking care not to overwater. During the winter, the temperature must not drop below 10°C, and the soil should be kept almost completely dry. They should not be over fertilized because they have a tendency to rupture.
A. asterias 'super kabuto'
Astrophytum is an especially interesting genus because of the myriad hybrids that have been created recently, especially by Japanese growers, resulting in very interesting variations.
Here are some of the results achieved by Mr. Shmuel Matityahu :
A. 'kabuto' x coahuilense
An unusual variety, its flowers are shades of red, which is very uncharacteristic of this genus and a rarity in collections. There are plants now that have wine-red flowers, which are sold for hundreds of dollars for that reason. Their source, of course, is Japan.
A.myriostigma v.'white goat'
A. myriostigma v.multipunctata
Bearing an especially dense texture of large flecks and large densely-spaced areoles.
A. myriostigma cv. 'Lotusland'
A strange and marvelous variety producing offsets from the grooves between the ribs instead of from the areoles, as one would expect.
